From my viewpoint, CMO's (companies that have them that is) have an average tenure of 22 months. More than ever, Finance is able to trump marketing because they have the numbers to prove it. Marketing needs to have similar 'proof' if it wants Boardroom respect.

My opinion is that Marketing guys/gals woefully undersell themselves and the importance of their role -- after all isn't it all about getting and keeping profitable customers.
